Matthew R. Nienow

Matthew R. Nienow (he/him) is a trombonist and educator completing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Trombone Performance at Stony Brook University. He earned a Master of Music in Trombone Performance from The Hartt School and a Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance from Eastern Michigan University. His principal teachers and mentors include Rick Stout, John Rojak, Michael Powell, Haim Avitsur, Andrea Neumann, and Donald Babcock.

A committed performer, Matthew has presented numerous solo recitals featuring diverse repertoire from contemporary works to classical concerti. He was a featured soloist with the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra and a guest artist at the Manchester Music Festival. Matthew’s solo highlights also include performances at the International Women’s Brass Conference. He is active in chamber and ensemble playing throughout the country demonstrating versatility across solo, chamber, and orchestral literature.

In academic and community teaching, Matthew has served as the undergraduate brass instructor at Stony Brook University teaching trombone, euphonium, and tuba. Matthew maintains a vigorous private studio where he develops individualized curricula for students of all ages and levels. He also contributes to community arts programs around the country, offering masterclasses and mentorship to developing artists."
